Slither-Bot

This snakelike robot can slither its way through tight spaces otherwise inaccessible to humans and help rescuers assess a dangerous situation. The “SORYU V,” left, was developed by Shigeo Hirose of Tokyo and was shown to the public at the Montgomery County Fire Rescue Training Academy in Rockville, Md., in 2006. Designers say the robot could be helpful to firefighters trying to rescue people from burning buildings.
