Braving the Caves

“Hermes” robots, like the one pictured at left, go into potentially dangerous war zones and detect mines, explosives, and ****y traps, clearing the way for soldiers. The war in Afghanistan marks the first time conventional military forces have used robots in combat.

No Driver Required

In 2004, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) sponsored a civilian competition to find the best autonomous-vehicle technology. The competition was an effort by the Pentagon to produce unmanned ground vehicles that could go to exceptionally dangerous areas instead of U.S. soldiers. Here, the Golem I competes in the DARPA race, which boasted a million-dollar grand prize.

Submarine Savior

Underwater robots are used by the British government to rescue mini-submarines. In 2005, a Russian sub became entangled in deep-sea cables, imperiling its crew of seven as oxygen was slowly depleted. After three days, the Scorpio robot, left, untangled the sub and saved the crew members’ lives.
